Duration: 8 hours

Around 1590 a group of hunters passed by this area and one of the huntsmen accidentally found an image of the Virgin Mary. According to the legend, the painting started to bleed.
The place became therefore a centre of pilgrimage and thanks to a very important one, the duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy, the first stone of the Sanctuary of Vicoforte, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was put in place.
However, construction was resumed in the 18th century and was completed with an extraordinary dome, considered the largest elliptical frescoed cupola in the world. It has major and minor diameter of 36 and 25 metres (118 and 82 ft) respectively while the frescoes cover an area of 6.032 square metres (64.930 sq ft).
After visiting the Sanctuary, the excursion continues to the city of Mondovì where lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
A 10 minutes ride with the funicular will take us to the oldest district of the little town, called Piazza. It’s sort of a village inside the city, which tells the history of Mondovì through its most ancient constructions, its alleys and the beautiful cathedral.
Last but not least, before leaving this amazing little city we step in the Belvedere park to take beautiful pictures of an unforgettable panorama over the lower section of the Alps.
