The Underground Cathedrals of Canelli
Duration: 8 hours
Languages: IT, EN, DE, FR, ES

The Vineyard landscape of lower Piedmont has been protected by Unesco since 2014 as part of the world heritage. Canelli is the place where the application started.

Nowadays famous also for its industrial district, namely in the field of automated bottling plant, Canelli is also the cradle of sparkling wine in Italy, based on the so called Classic method, that requires a long time between the harvest and the release of the final product into the market.

The excursion will take you to the so called “Underground Cathedrals” of Canelli which are tunnels excavated into the hill, at an average 36 meters depth into the hills of Monferrato, built for ageing the local white wine called Asti and Moscato.

After a deep understanding of the local wine making tradition, lunch will be served at a local restaurant and, on the way back, a guided visit of Asti, whose well preserved medieval city centre will complete your understanding of the magical nature of the area.
